How to Interview an Accountant or Finance Manager in the UAE: 12 Questions That Separate Strong From Average

By CA Ketul Patel, Founder, Accounting Baba  ·  2026-09-19  ·  Surat, India & Dubai, UAE

Most interviews for finance roles fail in the same way: they test how well someone talks, not how well they close a month, file a VAT return or explain a variance to a founder. In the UAE that gap costs more, because the technical bar is set by VAT, corporate tax and audit requirements that a candidate either has real experience with or does not.

This guide gives you a simple structure for interviewing an accountant or finance manager in the UAE: what to decide before the first call, twelve questions worth asking, what a good answer sounds like, and how to check the answers afterwards. It is written for companies with a small finance team, where one wrong hire is felt for a long time.

Before the Interview: Define the Seat in Three Lines

Write down, in plain language, what this person will own in the first six months. Three lines are enough:

If you cannot write these lines, the interview will drift into general chat and you will hire the most confident person in the room.

Twelve Questions Worth Asking

Fundamentals

  1. "Walk me through your month-end close, step by step." A good answer names the sequence (bank reconciliations, accruals, prepayments, fixed assets, intercompany, review) and the day each is normally done by. Vague answers such as "I check everything" are a warning.
  2. "Tell me about a reconciliation that would not balance. What was the cause?" You want a concrete story with a cause, a fix and a control they added afterwards.
  3. "What did your last set of management accounts look like, and who read them?" This shows whether they have produced numbers people actually use.

UAE compliance

  1. "Take me through a VAT return from invoice to filing." Listen for how they decide standard, zero-rated and exempt supplies, how reverse charge is handled, how input tax is supported by valid tax invoices, and how the return is reconciled to the ledger before it goes to the Federal Tax Authority.
  2. "How has corporate tax changed your records and your year-end?" The regime applies to financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. A strong candidate can describe what they changed in practice, such as tracking non-deductible items, related-party transactions and supporting documents.
  3. "What is different about a free zone company and a mainland company for accounting and tax?" Even a short answer shows whether they have worked in your setup or are guessing.

Process and systems

  1. "Which systems have you run, and what would you fix in them?" Whether it is Tally, QuickBooks, Zoho Books, Odoo, SAP or another package, the second half of the question matters more. People who have really used a system have opinions about it.
  2. "How do you prepare for an audit?" Look for a schedule of working papers, reconciled balances, fixed asset registers and a clear list of open items, not last-minute clean-up.
  3. "How do you handle payments approval and segregation of duties in a small team?" In a small company one person often does too much. A careful candidate raises the risk themselves and describes simple controls.

Judgement and communication

  1. "Explain a variance to me as if I am not an accountant." Finance managers spend much of their time translating numbers for owners and other departments.
  2. "Tell me about a time you disagreed with a director or founder about a number." You are looking for someone who holds a position with evidence and stays professional.
  3. "What would you want to know about our business in your first two weeks?" Good candidates ask about cash, customers, approvals and reporting deadlines before they ask about salary.

A Thirty-Minute Practical Exercise

Instead of a fourth round of questions, give a short exercise that matches the job. For an accountant, this can be a bank reconciliation with two or three planted differences, or a small batch of invoices to classify for VAT. For a finance manager, a one-page set of monthly figures where you ask them to find what looks wrong and what they would ask the team.

Keep it realistic, keep it short, and tell them how it will be used. Do not give live company data, and do not use the exercise to get real work done for free.

Where a Specialist Recruiter Helps

Everything above takes time, and the first pass is the most time-consuming: reading dozens of CVs, screening calls, checking memberships and asking the technical questions before you ever see a profile. That is the stage a specialist can take off your plate. Read more on why senior UAE hires need more than referrals and job boards, and on choosing a boutique agency over a large one if your team is under 100 people.

Accounting Baba is a boutique recruitment firm founded by CA Ketul Patel. For UAE finance and accounting roles, candidates are sourced and reviewed by Chartered Accountants before a profile reaches you, so your interview time goes on the final conversations rather than the first screen. You can speak to the founder directly about the role before anything is agreed. Our UAE hiring page explains the process, and our guide to hiring an accountant from India for a UAE business covers that route in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many interview rounds should a UAE company run for a finance hire?
Two is usually enough: a technical conversation with whoever will manage the role, then a short practical exercise and a meeting with the decision maker. More rounds tend to lose good candidates, who are often talking to other employers at the same time.
What should I ask an accountant about VAT in the UAE?
Ask them to walk you through a VAT return from the first invoice to the filing with the Federal Tax Authority: how they decide what is standard-rated, zero-rated or exempt, how they handle reverse charge, and how they reconcile the return to the ledger. A specific, step-by-step answer from real experience is the signal you want.
Should a finance manager candidate know UAE corporate tax?
Yes. The UAE corporate tax regime applies to financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023, so any finance manager hired today should be able to explain how it affects your books, records and filing calendar. Ask what they have actually prepared or reviewed, not what they have read.
Is a practical test appropriate for accountant candidates?
Yes, if it is short and realistic. Thirty minutes on a bank reconciliation, or classifying a handful of invoices for VAT, tells you more than another round of questions. Keep it to work you would actually give the person, and do not use it to get free work done.
How do I verify a finance candidate's qualifications and experience?
Ask for the professional membership number and check it with the issuing body, speak to at least one previous manager directly, and confirm dates of employment. Be cautious of gaps or titles that cannot be verified. A specialist recruiter should already have done this before you see a profile.
